Hamilton company fined $50,000 after worker injured by grinder

HAMILTON, ON, Feb. 12 - Kromet International Inc., operating as Alumabrite Anodizing Ltd., of Hamilton, was fined $50,000 in the Ontario Court of Justice following an incident in which a worker was injured by machinery.
Justice of the Peace Paul A. Welsh imposed the fine after the company pleaded guilty. The court heard that a worker was using a Three Head Grinder at the company's manufacturing location at 20 Milburn Rd., Hamilton. The machine uses brushes to apply a finish to aluminum parts such as refrigerator door handles. On October 20, 2006, the worker attempted adjustments to the machinery while it was operating. The worker's glove and hand became entangled in a pinch roller, causing injury.
A Ministry of Labour investigation found that the company had failed as an employer to provide adequate information, instruction and supervision to the worker about the safe operation of the grinder, contrary to section 25(2)(a) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
In addition to the fine, the court imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge on the total, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
