Inquest into the death of Jacy Pierre announced

THUNDER BAY, ON, Dec. 3 /CNW/ - Dr. David S. Eden, Regional Supervising Coroner for North Region, Thunder Bay Office, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Jacy Pierre.
Mr. Pierre, 27, died on October 27, 2007, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, following a transfer from the Thunder Bay District Jail. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory when a person dies while in custody.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Pierre's death, including the availability of illicit drugs in a detention centre setting. The jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
The inquest will begin on February 23, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. at the Ontario Government Building, 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay. Dr. Shelagh McRae will preside as inquest coroner and Ms. Lorraine Cavion will be counsel to the coroner.
