Minister's Statement on Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board Management
Liz Sandals, Minister of Education, issued the following statement today about the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board and the work of supervisor Norbert Hartmann:
"I would like to thank Norbert Hartmann for his hard work and dedication as supervisor of the Windsor-Essex Catholic School Board. A key accomplishment during his tenure was the June budget that will ensure the board's future financial sustainability.
Now that a balanced budget is in place, it is the appropriate time to introduce a new management model. In his report earlier this year, Mr. Hartmann recommended a transition to co-management at the board. I agree that such a change is appropriate, so I am pleased to announce that we are now moving into a co-management model.
This is the next phase in supervision, and is the first step towards returning full power back to the board. Under this model, the chair and vice-chair will participate in the decision-making process and provide advice to the supervisor with the intention to build consensus on decisions coming forward to the board. With a balanced budget in place, one of the key priorities of the co-management team will be to help restore public confidence in the operations of the board.
We have appointed Janine Griffore as the board's supervisor to build on the work of Mr. Hartmann, who put the board on more sound financial footing.
Our government has made significant investments in publicly funded education so that every student benefits from a world-class education system. We remain committed to ensuring sound financial practices at the board and providing Windsor's students with the best possible education."
