Construction is underway on a new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) regional headquarters and forensic identification unit in Smiths Falls that will enhance community safety in the East Region and create 50 local construction jobs.

The new headquarters and forensic identification unit will replace the existing facility and will provide the OPP with state of the art resources that will help the OPP protect local families and keep the community safe. The modern building is part of the McGuinty Government's commitment to replace or upgrade OPP facilities for front-line officers, helping them keep Ontario's communities safer. Updating Ontario's community safety infrastructure, roads, highways, transit, hospitals and schools is part of the government's plan to create jobs, grow local economies and ensure the province remains strong and competitive for years to come.

  • The new modern OPP facility will be approximately 50,270 square feet over two floors, and will house about 109 OPP members, will provide the OPP with a lab area with three bio-hazard suites, a chemical room, photo studio, multi-media room, multi-function storage, a room for pattern analysis cases and academic research, a boardroom for training and meetings, and a filing room equipped with a high density storage system designed to store fingerprints.
  • OPP Forensic Identification Services are responsible for collecting physical evidence at crime scenes, examination of the evidence and storage until trial.
  • This facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
  • The facility is one of 18 new detachments, regional headquarters and forensic identification units being constructed in 16 communities across Ontario.
  • Since 2003, the McGuinty government has invested $93 million to replace or significantly renovate more than 30 OPP detachments, provincial communications centres and forensic identification units.
  • Shield Infrastructure Partnership has been contracted to design, build, finance and maintain the new facilities for a 30-year period.
