Ontario has appointed two new judges to the Ontario Court of Justice effective July 11, 2012, and a regional senior judge to the Ontario Court of Justice effective June 27, 2012.

New Judicial Appointments

Justice Cynthia Johnston was called to the Bar in 1993 and became a duty counsel for the Ontario Legal Aid Plan in Durham region. From 1994-2008, she was an assistant Crown attorney for Durham region, prosecuting numerous offences before the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice. Since 2008 she has been deputy Crown attorney in Durham where she helped manage more than 50 counsel and support staff while she continued to conduct serious, complicated prosecutions. Justice Johnston has been a committee member for the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Care Centre of Durham Region, a participant in the Durham Courtrooms and Classrooms Project and a volunteer for the John Howard Society of Durham. She has been actively involved in professional development and training for lawyers. Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice Johnston to preside in Oshawa.

Justice Allan Gary Letourneau was called to the Bar in 1991 and since then has practised criminal and family litigation, first as an associate with Lanny Kamin and then as partner. He is certified in collaborative family law and has conducted trials and motions in the Family Division of the Superior Court of Justice. In criminal matters, he has appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal. Justice Letourneau was a member of the Legal Aid Ontario Area Committee for the Durham-Frontenac District, has been secretary of the Frontenac Law Association and president of the Kingston Criminal Defence Lawyers Association. He was a committee member for the Kingston FunFly Charity event where proceeds went to the Blind Children's Summer Camp and the OPP Youth Camp. Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice Letourneau to preside in Kingston.

Regional Senior Judge Appointment

Justice Martin Lambert was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in February 1999 and became a Local Administrative Judge in 2001. He presided in both criminal and family courts in Sault Ste. Marie, Cochrane and Timmins. Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice Lambert as a Regional Senior Judge to preside in the Northeast region.

A Regional Senior Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice exercises the powers and performs the duties of the Chief Justice in his or her region, subject to the authority of the Chief Justice. This includes scheduling court hearings and assigning cases to individual judges.
