Alpine Plant Foods Corporation fined $50,000 for contaminated water discharge
KITCHENER -- Alpine Plant Foods Corporation has been fined $50,000 plus a victim fine surcharge, after pleading guilty to a violation under the Ontario Water Resources Act for discharging fertilizer contaminated water. The company was given one year to pay the fine.
The Court heard that ministry staff responded to an unknown milky white substance in a municipal drain in New Hamburg. The substance was found to have originated from Alpine Plant Foods Corporation, a manufacturer of plant food for agricultural use. Ministry staff determined that a spill of liquid fertilizer occurred at the Alpine Plant Foods Corporation facility when an employee was transferring the material between silos. The material migrated off the property and into a field drain.
Alpine Plant Foods Corporation was charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment's Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
