Environmental Penalties Funding Available To Local Groups
Eligible groups are invited to apply for funding to conduct remediation, restoration, and research activities and to educate the public in eight watersheds affected by environmental violations.
Money in the Ontario Community Environment Fund (OCEF) comes from penalties imposed on companies that have violated regulatory requirements under Ontario's 'You Spill, You Pay' law.
Many types of projects can qualify for funding. For example, previous recipients are using their funding to conduct research, monitor and restore habitats, clean up waterways, and plant trees and shrubs. All of these projects will help with the restoration of three Ontario watersheds.Applications for 2010 funding will be accepted until 5 p.m. on June 28, 2010.
- Groups can now apply for funding for the following watersheds: Big Creek, Credit River-16 Mile Creek, Goulais, Lower Grand, Onaping, Michipicoten-Magpie, Penetangore and Whitefish.
- Eligible groups are Aboriginal communities and organizations, academic institutions, conservation authorities, municipalities, incorporated non-profit organizations and incorporated community-based groups.
