Backgrounder: The Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund
The Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund supports local, community activities that restore and protect the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin. It complements two other Great Lakes initiatives recently brought forward by this government.
The proposed Great Lakes Protection Act introduced in June 2012 would, if passed, ensure cleaner Great Lakes that are protected for the future. The legislation would provide new tools including a Great Lakes Guardians Council to bring together government and community groups to identify provincial priorities and focus actions to address them.
The Great Lakes Strategy is posted on the Environmental Registry until August 7, 2012 for public comment. It describes the environmental health challenges the Great Lakes face, and will help draw a roadmap of actions that should be taken to protect the lakes. The strategy will be updated periodically as needed.
