Ajax School Fined $5,000 for Failing to Comply with a Ministry Order

Whitby- An Ajax school was fined $5,000 for failing to comply with a ministry order in relation to a drinking water system, contrary to the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Jaamiah-Al-Uloom Al-Islamiyyah Ontario operated a boy's Islamic Institute of Learning in Ajax.

A laboratory analysis determined E. coli and total coliforms counts found in a drinking water distribution sample had exceeded provincial drinking water standards. The Durham Health Unit immediately placed a boil-water advisory on the school.

Following an inspection, ministry staff directed the school to make changes in the system in an attempt to bring the drinking water system into compliance. Ongoing abatement efforts with the school were unsuccessful. Due to the drinking water system being inadequate, a ministry order was issued with seven requirements.

The ministry confirmed that the school had failed to comply with the order by failing to provide a letter that the drinking water treatment system at the site was in good repair and all appropriate actions had been taken to ensure the provision of safe drinking water.

The school was fined $5,000 plus a victim fine surcharge of $1,250 and was given one year to pay the fine.
