Burford Company Fined $40,000 For Failing To Notify Ministry Of Gas Discharge

Burlington - Contract Drilling Professionals Inc. was fined $40,000 for failing to forthwith notify the ministry of a discharge of natural gas into the environment, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act.

The company specializes in drilling boreholes for geothermal systems and is located in Burford. The company drilled a heat pump well on property located in Oakville for a geothermal system. While drilling, a deposit of natural gas was struck releasing a large quantity of gas into the natural environment.

During the course of their investigation, the fire department discovered the drill rig venting natural gas at the site. The company was contacted by the fire department regarding the drill rig. The company did not notify the ministry about the discharge until after being contacted by the fire department.

The company was fined $40,000 plus a victim fine surcharge of $10,000 and was given one year to pay the fine.
