Company Fined $11,000 For Illegal Waste Activities

Belleville - Tompkins Bros. Landscaping & Excavating Inc. was fined $11,000 for depositing waste at a site without a ministry approval, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act.

The company operates a landscaping and excavating operation located in the Township of Tyendinaga. The company was hired to remove demolition waste from a site in Trenton which had been destroyed in a fire.

The company transported demolition waste from the site to a transfer site in Belleville. The waste which included fabric, mattresses, painted wood and ashes was water soaked increasing the weight and the tipping fees associated with the deposit of the waste. As a result, the company transported the remainder of the demolition waste to their own site so that it could dry out and decrease the weight and in turn, the tipping fees. The company did not have the appropriate ministry approvals or registration for a waste disposal site at that location.

The company was fined $11,000 plus a victim fine surcharge of $2,750 and was given one year to pay the fine.
