Huron Dairy Farm Fined $32,500 For River Discharge

Goderich - Terpstra Farms Ltd. was fined $32,500 for discharging silage seepage into the Sanders Drain and Maitland River that may have impaired the water quality, contrary to the Ontario Water Resources Act.

Terpstra Farms Ltd. operates a dairy farm located in the Municipality of Huron East. The ministry attended the farm and observed evidence of a discharge of silage seepage into the Maitland River. Over the next several days, the owner and ministry staff tried to find the source of the pollution. It was determined that the source of the contamination was from the dairy farm. The ministry's analytical and other results indicated that the discharge had the ability to impair the water quality.

The company was fined $32,500 plus a victim fine surcharge of $8,125 and was given eight months to pay the fine.
