Laird Township Resident Fined $1,000 For Illegal Waste Activities Involving Tires

Sault Ste. Marie - Ray R. Hackney was fined $1,000 for operating a waste disposal site for tires without a ministry approval, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act.

Ray R. Hackney was engaged in cleaning a former scrapyard located in Laird Township. The township issued a fire permit to Mr. Hackney to permit controlled burning at the site.

The Echo Bay Fire Department received multiple calls of black smoke coming from the site. The firefighters were directed to extinguish the fire involving 50 to 60 tires. Firefighters approached Mr. Hackney who provided his fire permit and admitted to setting the fire. The fire department advised Mr. Hackney that he could not burn tires and revoked his permit.

Mr. Hackney was fined $1,000 plus a victim fine surcharge of $250 and was given one year to pay the fine.
