Ottawa Companies Fined $17,000 For Illegal Waste Activities

Brockville - Two Ottawa companies were fined $17,000 for establishing a waste disposal site without a ministry approval, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act.

Sluyter Isaac Investments Inc. previously owned property and buildings that are part of a former college located near Brockville. 1634182 Ontario Ltd. o/a Robert Gourlay Construction was hired to demolish Murray Hall located on the property. Sluyter Isaac Investments acknowledges that it had a legal responsibility to ensure that demolition and construction activity on the site was performed in accordance with legal requirements.

The ministry attended a separate property and observed demolition waste from Murray Hall that had been deposited on the property.  A search of ministry records confirmed no approval for a waste disposal site existed for this site or any of the named parties.

Sluyter Isaac Investments Inc. was fined $10,000 and 1634182 Ontario Ltd. o/a Robert Gourlay Construction was fined $7,000 for a total of $17,000 plus victim fine surcharges totaling $4,250 and were given six months to pay the fines.
