Resort Owner/Operator Fined $6,750 for Sewage Discharge

Kenora - Alvin Rempel, pleaded guilty to one violation and was fined $6,750, for permitting the discharge of sewage into Cedar Lake, which may have impaired the quality of the water, contrary to the Ontario Water Resources Act.

Mr. Rempel owns and operates a tourist resort known as Cedar Lake Lodge, which is located in Kenora. The resort consists of multiple cabins and a main lodge; all serviced with water and sewage systems.

The lodge was inspected by the ministry. At the time, a sewage works was in operation and sewage effluent was being pumped into a sewage retention pond. However, it was observed that sewage material was breaching the berm of the retention pond, flowing overland, down-gradient, and into Cedar Lake. Water samples from Cedar Lake were collected and analyzed and showed elevated concentrations of nutrients and bacteria.

Subsequently, the matter was referred to the ministry's Investigations and Enforcement Branch.

Mr. Rempel pleaded guilty to one offence, was fined $6,750 plus a victim fine surcharge of $1,687.50 and was given 12 months to pay the fine.
