Penalty Imposed - On July 10, 2018, Wessuc Inc. was convicted of one violation under the Environmental Protection Act and was fined $9,000 plus a Victim Fine Surcharge of $2,250 and was given 6 months to pay the fine.

Background -

  • Wessuc Inc. operates from a location on Colborne Street East in Brantford, and holds a valid certificate of approval for a waste management system to transport biosolids.

  • On June 14, 2016, Wessuc Inc. was transporting a load of liquid waste containing sugar wash water from a client's location to a bio-digester site in Oxford County, using a piece of equipment that was not registered on the ministry approval.

  • During transportation, approximately 3000 litres of waste was spilled onto a gravel road and into a roadside ditch on Line 35 between Road 92 and Road 88 in Oxford County.

  • An officer identified that the trailer was not included in the company's fleet information, contrary to the requirements of the certificate of approval.

  • The ministry's Investigations and Enforcement Branch investigated and laid charges resulting in one conviction.
