2011 Minister's Awards for Apprenticeship Training
Each year, Ontario honours exceptional employers for their commitment to apprenticeship training. This June, four winners will be selected from the following 16 nominees by a panel of apprenticeship experts from different sectors, including labour organizations, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and community colleges.
The sixteen nominees for 2011:
Arborvalley Urban Forestry Co. Inc., Newmarket
The company has trained apprentice arborists for 16 years and also participates in the new utility arborist trade. It is active on many committees to develop skills training and working groups that promote apprenticeship, and also assists with the development of training curriculum.
Besseling Mechanical Inc., Hamilton
Currently employing nine apprentice plumbers, the company has been training apprentices since 1965. It has participated in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and high school co-op programs for seven years.
BLM Transportation Group Inc., Kitchener
A family-run business for more than 27 years, the company consistently supports apprenticeship training. It employs eight journeypersons in the truck and coach and tractor- trailer service field.
Community Living Toronto, Toronto
This organization helps people with intellectual disabilities, and employs 19 apprentice developmental service workers at its locations in the Greater Toronto Area. It incorporates apprenticeship into training of all of its employees.
Con's Electric Company Ltd., Timmins
The company has been in business since 1985, training more than 50 apprentices. It has four construction and maintenance electrician apprentices, and hires and trains co-op students.
Classic Honda, Brampton
For 12 years, the company has trained automotive service technician, auto body and collision damage repair, automotive parts person and automotive painter apprentices. It recruits high school co-op students and participates in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.
Deloro Stellite, Belleville
A global group of engineering businesses, the company is training two general machinist apprentices. It has been a consistent supporter of apprenticeship for more than 31 years.
Elliot Lake Ford, Elliot Lake
The company has been an apprenticeship trainer since 1988, training five automotive service technicians. It partners with local English and French-speaking high schools in the co-op education program.
In business since 1977, the company has trained apprentices since 2003 as industrial millwright mechanics. It is a specialist in automatic greasing systems and is a supplier to major manufacturers and truck and heavy equipment users.
George and Asmussen Ltd., Breslau
A family-owned business established in 1948, it trains apprentice brick and stone masons, heavy duty equipment technicians, and truck and coach technicians. The company also participates in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.
Laser Electric Ltd., Balderson
A family-owned electrical installation and service company, the company has been operating for more than 22 years. It has more than 20 employees, and trains construction and maintenance electrician apprentices.
Mining Technologies International Inc., North Bay
The company operates four manufacturing facilities and has been training apprentices for more than 10 years. It trains 11 general machinist and three industrial mechanic millwright apprentices.
North America Construction Ltd., Morriston
The company has 50 apprentice carpenters, plumbers, pipefitters, electricians, welders and millwrights. Since 2005, it has trained 54 apprentices and provides pre-apprenticeship training in carpentry, plumbing and pipefitting.
The Mane Obsession Hair Salon, Kingston
The company, owned and operated by two professional hair stylists, has been in business for more than 20 years. It has trained nearly 100 apprentice hair stylists, with most starting as co-op students.
Toromont CAT, Thunder Bay
The company has trained apprentices for more than 30 years, and is now training heavy equipment technician and truck and coach technician apprentices. It is actively involved with local educators, providing work placements for students and hiring graduates.
Wells Ford Sales Ltd., StirlingA family-run business, the company has trained more than 40 apprentices, and is now training two apprentice automotive service technicians. It has been active in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.
