Recipient of the 2015 Minister's Lifetime Achievement Award
Each year, Ontario recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and promoted excellence within the province's college system. This year's winner of the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities' annual Lifetime Achievement Award is Robert Gillett.
Robert Gillett was appointed President and CEO of Algonquin College in 1996 and served until his retirement in 2012.
He was also integral to building many lasting community partnerships, both in Ottawa and abroad. Under his leadership, Algonquin partnered with universities to offer joint degrees, allowing graduates to emerge with college and university credentials.
In addition, Mr. Gillett was instrumental in involving Algonquin in numerous charitable initiatives, which include the establishment of the Algonquin College Foundation, which raises funds for scholarships, bursaries and capital projects.
He has also served as a board member and trustee of numerous organizations in Ottawa that address the community's economic and social needs.
Robert Gillett's contributions to the postsecondary sector and Ottawa region have been widely recognized. He has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa, the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Education Award and the Lieutenant's Medal of Distinction in Public Administration in 2004.
