Ontario Invests in Innovative Learning Facilities for Thunder Bay Students
Province Supporting New Advanced Engineering and Science Centre at Lakehead University
Ontario is investing in new advanced research and training facilities at Lakehead University, to help equip students in Thunder Bay with the skills they need for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
Michael Gravelle, MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North was joined by Patty Hajdu, MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North at Lakehead today to make the announcement.
The investment from the province and the federal government in Lakehead's Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering and Science, will support a new laboratories and research facilities, including new space for graduate students focused on innovation and entrepreneurship.
Ontario is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province's history -- about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and transit. Since 2015, the province has announced support for more than 475 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life. Investing in postsecondary infrastructure is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.
- The overall cost to complete this project is approximately $18.6 million and includes $8 million from Canada’s Strategic Investment Fund, $1.5 million from Ontario, and $9.1 million from Lakehead University.
- Ontario has invested $735 million in capital funding for colleges and universities since 2013-14.
- Research shows that every $100 million of public infrastructure investment in Ontario boosts the gross domestic product by $114 million, particularly in the construction and manufacturing sectors.
