Two New Judges Appointed To The Ontario Court Of Justice

Two judges have been appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice effective September 30, 2009.

Justice Mitch Hoffman was called to the Bar in 1989 and specialized in criminal law.  As assistant Crown attorney for Essex County, Justice Hoffman served as bilingual designate, child abuse designate as well as hate crimes designate.  He was the acting Crown attorney for both Bruce County and Haldimand County and was the regional Crown liaison for the Provincial Joint Forces Biker Enforcement Unit.  Justice Hoffman served as a member of the Essex Child Abuse Council and Sexual Offenders Task Force Sub-Committee and was co-chair of the Domestic Violence Advisory Committee.  He has also been a participant in the Six Nations community justice initiative working to develop a community justice program.  As an active member of the community, Justice Hoffman sat on the board of directors for the Windsor branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association and is a frequent guest lecturer at the University of Windsor, St. Clair College, area high schools and community forums.  Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice Hoffman to preside in Windsor.

Justice Barry Martin Tobin was called to the Bar in 1979 and specialized in family law and civil litigation.  He was a partner with the firm, Marcus, Tobin until 2002, and with Brown, Beattie and O'Donovan, where he continued his family law practice.  Justice Tobin has represented clients at all levels of court in Ontario and his extensive family law experience includes representing parties in negotiation and litigation, including appeals. He has also been a member of the Legal Aid Panel and the Lawyer Referral Service.  He has acted as an agent for the Office of the Children's Lawyer and represented children in child welfare cases and custody and access disputes. In 1994 he was appointed a deputy judge of the Small Claims Court and has presided over trials, motions and judgement summons hearings.  As an active member of his community, Justice Tobin has sat on the boards of "Changing Ways", a member agency of the London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse, and Merrymount Children's Centre.  Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice Tobin to preside in Windsor.
