Two New Judges Appointed To The Ontario Court Of Justice

The province has appointed two new judges to the Ontario Court of Justice effective November 10, 2010.

Justice Sheilagh O'Connell was called to the bar in 1991. As a sole practitioner from 1991 to 1999, she practised family law, which included representing children on behalf of the Office of the Children's Lawyer. She continued her family law practice until 2009, focusing on child protection for those clients eligible for legal aid assistance. In 1999, she joined the Toronto Family Law Office of Legal Aid Ontario where she served as director from 2002 to 2009. Most recently, Justice O'Connell served as Director of Legal Aid Ontario's Family Law Services for the Greater Toronto Region. She has represented clients at all levels of court in Ontario, with an emphasis on representing disadvantaged people and abused women. She has been a member of the Family Lawyers Association and the Law Union of Ontario. As an active member of the legal community, she has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Law and Social Policy and sat as a member of the Long Trial Advisory Committee and Best Practices Sub-Committee, Child Protection Trials, for the Ministry of the Attorney General. Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice O'Connell to preside in Milton.

Justice Kevin Sherwood was called to the bar in 1984. He practised criminal law, family law and civil litigation in Port Elgin from 1984 to 1991 as an associate and partner with Ryder, Planz and Sherwood, and as a partner with Sherwood Wyonch from 1991 to 2003. He has been a sole practitioner since 2004. Justice Sherwood has served as duty counsel for Legal Aid Ontario, as the solicitor of record for the Children's Aid Society and as an agent of the Crown for the Attorney General of Ontario in Bruce County. From 1984 to 2009, he represented children on behalf of the Office of the Children's Lawyer. As a member of the Bruce County Law Association since 1984, he served as its president from 1995 to 1997 and as the association's representative on the Central West Region Bench and Bar Committee since 1999. He has also held numerous roles on the Port Elgin and District Chamber of Commerce since 1984. Chief Justice Annemarie E. Bonkalo has assigned Justice Sherwood to preside in Simcoe.
