Ontario Nominates New Executive Chair For Social Justice Cluster

Michael Gottheil has been nominated, subject to review by the Standing Committee on Government Agencies, as executive chair of the cluster of social justice tribunals.
This agency cluster includes:
- Child and Family Services Review Board
- Custody Review Board
- Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario
- Landlord and Tenant Board
- Social Benefits Tribunal
- Special Education Tribunals (French and English).
Gottheil brings a wealth of experience to the post. Most recently, he served as executive chair of Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario. Prior to that, Gottheil was chair of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, where he led it through a fundamental transformation. He is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1987. He has also practised labour, employment and human rights law.
Jerry DeMarco, alternate chair of Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario, will assume Gottheil's responsibilities until a competition can be held and a new executive chair appointed.
Tribunal clustering is part of the government's Open Ontario plan to ensure social justice is more effective, accessible and affordable for Ontarians, and is accountable, transparent and efficient.
