Statement from Attorney General on Swearing-in of Chief Justice George Strathy
Today, Madeleine Meilleur, Attorney General of Ontario, issued the following statement:
"Today, I had the honour of witnessing the swearing-in of the Honourable George Strathy as chief justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario, our province's highest court.
A respected judge, lawyer and author, Chief Justice Strathy first rose to prominence as a civil litigator, where he focused on maritime, insurance and transportation law. He has also written on these areas of law extensively. As a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in the Toronto region, he further distinguished himself through his influential work on class-action matters.
Now, as the chief justice of one of the most respected benches in the country, Chief Justice Strathy will be a leader and a key thinker on some of the most important issues facing the Canadian justice system. As attorney general, I look forward to working with the new chief justice to improve access to justice and to modernize the delivery of legal services and information.
On behalf of all Ontarians, I wish to congratulate Chief Justice Strathy on this appointment as the senior judicial official in the province.
I extend my sincere thanks to the former chief justice, the Honourable Warren Winkler, whose work to improve the accessibility and transparency of our courts has helped make Ontario's justice system the strong, respected institution it is today."
