New Associate Chief Justice Appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice
Ontario has appointed a new associate chief justice to the Ontario Court of Justice, effective June 3, 2015.
The Honourable Peter J. DeFreitas replaces the Honourable Lise Maisonneuve, who has been appointed Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice.
Associate Chief Justice DeFreitas is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario Law School and was called to the bar in 1994. Appointed as a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice in 2008, he presided in Oshawa where he distinguished himself as both an innovator and an educator, leading various initiatives related to court modernization and streamlining of judicial administration.
From 1994 until 2008, Associate Chief Justice DeFreitas was a prosecutor for the federal Department of Justice and the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
He has written articles for various legal publications and coordinated many continuing education programs for members of the legal community.
