Statement from Attorney General on Auditor General's Report

Ministry of the Attorney General

Attorney General Yasir Naqvi issued the following statement in response to the release of the Auditor General's report:

"I want to thank the Auditor General for her review of the Assessment Review Board (ARB) and the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), part of the Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario (ELTO) cluster of tribunals.

Making sure Ontarians have access to justice in a timely and affordable way, including at tribunals, is a central focus of the Ministry of the Attorney General. That's why we've already taken action to give communities a stronger voice by introducing legislation to overhaul land use planning appeals system, replace the OMB with the new Local Planning Appeal Tribunal, and create a new support centre that will provide free advice and representation at appeals.  Additionally, the ARB caseload backlog will be resolved within the next four years. We are creating greater transparency across ELTO with the release of more data in annual reports and the implementation of public satisfaction surveys. We believe these steps will ensure our tribunals are efficient, accessible, and cost-effective for all Ontarians.

The Auditor's recommendations will help build on our strong record of working to improve operations of adjudicative tribunals."
