Occupation-specific language training
The Ontario government is investing an additional $3.4 million over two years for job-specific language training. Launched in 2006, with an initial $2.2 million of funding, the Specialized Language Training Pilot Projects offer newcomers the opportunity to strengthen their language skills so they can land jobs that reflect their qualifications or function more effectively in jobs they currently hold.
Fifteen school boards across Ontario are offering occupation-specific language training in one of two ways:
- Specialized language training for market sectors where there are needs for the skills and experience many newcomers have; and
- English or French-as-a-Second-Language (E/FSL) upgrading for newcomers already in the workforce to improve their language skills at work.
