Consumer Alert: Applying for Ontario Birth, Marriage or Death Certificates

Ministry of Consumer Services

A ServiceOntario investigator is looking into complaints from consumers that a company has been offering to obtain applications for, and speed up the delivery of, Ontario birth, marriage and death certificates.

ServiceOntario is the only government-authorized source for birth, marriage or death certificates in Ontario, and it does not partner with, licence, or endorse any company to do this work.

Consumers should be aware that paying a fee to a company to obtain vital event certificates will increase the cost to them and they may not receive the certificate they paid for.

ServiceOntario.ca is the first and only official government website for Ontario birth, marriage and death certificates. Anyone can apply for their birth, marriage or death certificate online at ServiceOntario.ca.  The service is available 24/7 from anywhere in the world.  Applying online is easy and takes only minutes to complete.

The prices for certificates range from $15-45, depending on the type of certificate. They are delivered within 15 days. Certificates can be delivered within five days for additional $30 fee. No company can shorten the time required to process your application.

Always be careful when sharing your personal information.  Be especially careful with your birth certificate, which carries sensitive information that can be used to get other forms of government documents and identification.  Sharing your information with an untrusted source could make you a victim of fraud or identity theft.

If you are ordering your birth, marriage or death certificate through a website that is not ServiceOntario.ca, be sure to ask the right questions:

  • How much money would I save by doing it myself through ServiceOntario.ca instead of using your service?
  • What do you do with my information after applying for the certificate?
  • How do you protect my personal information?

If consumers have questions about applying for Ontario birth, marriage or death certificates, they should contact ServiceOntario at 416-325-8305 or 1-800-461-2156.
