Date For Inquest into the Death of Ashley Smith Announced
TORONTO -- Dr. Andrew McCallum, Chief Coroner for Ontario, today announced the details of the inquest that will be held into the death of Ashley Smith.
Ms. Smith, 19, died on October 19, 2007, while in custody at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. The inquest will examine the events surrounding Ms. Smith's death that occurred in Ontario. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The inquest is expected to last three to four months. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 1, 2010, at the Toronto Coroners Courts, 15 Grosvenor Street. Dr. Bonita Porter, Deputy Chief Coroner for Inquests, will preside as inquest coroner and Mr. Eric Siebenmorgen, Chief Counsel to the Chief Coroner, will be counsel to the coroner.
