Inquest Into The Death Of John Holness Announced

Dr. James Edwards, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of John Holness.

Mr. Holness, 57, died on December 1, 2008, while in custody at the Toronto East Detention Centre in Scarborough. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Holness' death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last five days and to hear from approximately 14 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 22, 2010, at the Toronto Coroners Courts, 15 Grosvenor Street. Dr. Bonnie Burke will preside as inquest coroner and Mr. Michael Blain will be counsel to the coroner.
