Statement by the Minister on the Ombudsman's Report on the G20 Regulation
I would like to thank the Ombudsman for his thorough report. I have met with the Ombudsman and have offered him my unequivocal commitment that we will comply with each of his recommendations. I have asked Retired Chief Justice McMurtry to review the Public Works Protection Act. I am pleased that the Ombudsman shares our view that Mr. McMurtry's mandate covers the areas of the Ombudsman's recommendations. Justice McMurtry's deliberations will benefit from the Ombudsman's report - and his recommendations will help the ministry implement the Ombudsman's recommendations. Following Justice McMurtry's advice we will introduce any needed amendments to the Public Works Protection Act to ensure that it reflects the security concerns and values of our society today and we will take steps to ensure that the public is notified when changes are made in the future. I want to emphasize one matter in particular. It is clear to me that we should have communicated the PWPA regulation much more directly, clearly and promptly. In any future instance, we shall communicate promptly and clearly.
