Inquest into the Death of a Youth Announced

TORONTO -- Dr. Bonita Porter, Deputy Chief Coroner - Inquests, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of a youth. 

The youth, died on May 13, 2008, while in custody at the Syl Apps Youth Centre.  An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. 

The inquest will examine the events surrounding the youth's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last five weeks and to hear from approximately thirty witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.

The location is to be determined.

Dr. Dirk Huyer will preside as inquest coroner and Ms. Rebecca Edward will be counsel to the coroner.
