Inquest Into the Death of Marlan Assinewai Announced

Kingston -- Dr. Roger Skinner, Regional Supervising Coroner for East Region, Kingston Office, today announced that an inquest will be held in the death of Marlan Assinewai.

Mr. Assinewai, age 24, died on April 16, 2003 while an inmate at the Millhaven Correctional Institution.  An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Assinewai's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last five days and to hear from fifteen witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012, at the Napanee Superior Court of Justice, 97 Thomas Street East.  Dr. Gordon Watt will preside as inquest coroner and Mr. Edward Bradley will be counsel to the coroner.
