Inquest into the Death of Phonesay Chanthachak Announced

Toronto - Dr. Roger Skinner, interim Deputy Chief Coroner for Investigations, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Phonesay Chanthachak.

Mr. Chanthachak, age 27, died on Feb. 13, 2012, at Hamilton General Hospital, following an encounter with officers of the Hamilton Police Service. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. 

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Chanthachak's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. 

The inquest is expected to last 10 days and to hear from approximately 15 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2013, at the John Sopinka Courthouse, 45 Main St. East, Hamilton.  Dr. Jack Stanborough will preside as inquest coroner and Graeme Leach will be counsel to the coroner.
