Minister's Statement on Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre
Today, Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, released the following statement on the labour situation at Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.
Ontario's correctional officers have extremely difficult jobs, and I take their health and safety concerns very seriously. I have always stated, as I did in the legislature today during Question Period, that the safety of correctional officers who work in our institutions is a priority for me and the ministry.
In fact, I share the concerns and frustrations of the correctional officers; nobody wants weapons or any other contraband entering the institution, and we need to work together to decrease violence and ensure a positive working relationship among the union, the managers, and the Ministry.
Having visited facilities across the province, I know how hard these men and women work, and they have told me about the challenges they face and the sacrifices they make every day in keeping our facilities safe.
We need to work together to solve the problems at EMDC. Much work remains to be done, but we are moving in the right direction. Our Government will continue to work with correctional officers as we move forward.
