Inquest into the Deaths of Jason Poffley and Joseph Caissie Announced

Dr. Peter Clark, Regional Supervising Coroner for East Region, today announced that an inquest will be held into the deaths of Jason Poffley and Joseph Caissie.

Mr. Poffley, age 24, died on Jan. 12, 2010, during transfer to the Kingston General Hospital from the Joyceville Correctional Institution. Mr. Caissie, age 60, died on Jan. 18, 2012, at the Kingston General Hospital following a transfer from the Joyceville Correctional Institution.  An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Mr. Poffley and Mr. Caissie. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last two days and to hear from six witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Superior Court of Justice, 5 Court St., Kingston. Dr. Gordon Watt will preside as inquest coroner and Mr. Gerard Laarhuis will be counsel to the coroner.
