Inquest into the Deaths of Steven Reaume and Tommy Nuvaqiq announced

Dr. Peter Clark, Regional Supervising Coroner for East Region, today announced that an inquest will be held into the deaths of Steven Reaume and Tommy Nuvaqiq.

Mr. Reaume, age 40, died on May 8, 2011, at the Kingston Penitentiary. Mr. Nuvaqiq, age 30, died on May 28, 2012, also at the Kingston Penitentiary.An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Mr. Reaume and Mr. Nuvaqiq. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last two days and to hear from seven witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2013, at the Superior Court of Justice, 5 Court St., Kingston. Dr. Gordon Watt will preside as inquest coroner and Mr. Gerard Laarhuis will be counsel to the coroner.
