Statement from the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services

Today, Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, released the following statement on the Ombudsman's investigation into police de-escalation guidelines:

This is a tragedy and I want to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Sammy Yatim and all those affected.

I want to thank Ontario Ombudsman André Marin for his comments today.  As this matter is still under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit, I cannot comment on the specifics of the incident.

My ministry takes use of force training for police officers very seriously.

In fact, all police officers in Ontario receive use of force training as recruits and on an annual basis thereafter as part of their in-service training.

The ministry is conducting an ongoing Use of Force Review that is examining officer training, the equipment they use and how use of force incidents are reported, and we will be looking at this very closely when working with the Ombudsman's office.

My ministry will cooperate fully with the Ombudsman's investigation and I look forward to his findings.
