Inquest into the Deaths of Daniel Mitchell and Darcy Rice Announced

Dr. Rick Mann, Regional Supervising Coroner for the West Region, London Office, today announced that an inquest will be held into the deaths of Daniel Mitchell and Darcy Rice.

Mr. Mitchell, age 30, died on April 25, 2013, at the Sarnia Jail. Mr. Rice, age 27, died on Dec. 15, 2011, at Bluewater Health following hospital transfer from the Sarnia Jail. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Rice. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last four days and to hear from 20 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at the Quality Inn, 751 Christina St. N., Sarnia. Dr. Thomas Wilson will preside as inquest coroner and Nicole Stoner will be counsel to the coroner.
