Inquest into the Death of Shawn Cole Announced

Dr. James Edwards, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that an inquest that will be held into the death of Shawn Cole.

Mr. Cole, age 34, died on Dec. 26, 2012, while in custody at the Toronto East Detention Centre. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. 

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Cole's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. 

The inquest is expected to last nine days and to hear from approximately 10 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015, at the Forensic Sciences and Coroner's Complex, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. Bonnie Burke will preside as inquest coroner, and Liesha Earle will be counsel to the coroner.
