Inquest Date into the Deaths of Benjamin Twiddy, Marilee Towie, Holly Harrison, Kevin Dunsmuir, Jennifer Dunsmuir, Robert Dunsmuir and Cameron Dunsmuir Announced

Dr. William J. Lucas, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Central West Office, today announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the deaths of Benjamin Twiddy, Marilee Towie, Holly Harrison, Kevin Dunsmuir, Jennifer Dunsmuir, Robert Dunsmuir and Cameron Dunsmuir.

Benjamin Twiddy, aged 19, Marilee Towie, aged 17, and Holly Harrison, aged 18, died in a house fire in Whitby on April 29, 2012. Kevin Dunsmuir, aged 55, Jennifer Dunsmuir, aged 51, Robert Dunsmuir, aged 19, and Cameron Dunsmuir, aged 16, died in a house fire in East Gwillimbury on March 29, 2013.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding all of the deaths, and will include the various aspects of fire safety before and during a fire, and local emergency services response to fire. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest will is expected to last five weeks and hear from approximately 30 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at the Coroners Courts, Forensic Services and Coroners Complex, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. David H. Evans will preside as inquest coroner and Frank Giordano will be counsel to the coroner.
