Inquest into the Death of Gerald Smith Announced

Dr. Paul Dungey, Regional Supervising Coroner for East Region, Kingston Office, today announced that an inquest will be held in the death of Gerald Smith.

Mr. Smith, 57, died on Dec. 4, 2013 at the Kingston General Hospital following a transfer from the Quinte Detention Centre. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.  

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Smith's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

Details regarding the date and location will be provided when the information becomes available.

Dr. Shane Teper will preside as inquest coroner and Monica Heine will be counsel to the coroner.
