New Date for the Inquest into the Death of Shane Garry Announced

Dr. James Edwards, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that a new date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Shane Garry.

Mr. Garry, 46, died on Feb. 7, 2014 while in custody at the Toronto East Detention Centre. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Mr. Garry's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. 

The inquest is expected to last one week and to hear from approximately 15 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the Forensic Sciences and Coroners Complex, 25 Morton Shulman Avenue, Toronto. Dr. Bonnie Burke will preside as inquest coroner and Jason Balgopal will be counsel to the coroner.
