Ontario Supporting Modern, Effective Policing
Police Grants Will Help Communities Get the Services They Need
Ontario is helping communities across the province deliver public safety initiatives and services tailored to local needs by investing in police services modernization projects.
This year, 15 police services boards are receiving funding under the province's new Policing Effectiveness and Modernization (PEM) program for projects such as:
- Establishing partnerships with other public safety personnel including special constables, mobile crisis response teams or other mental health crisis providers to ensure the most appropriate personnel is responding to emergency situations
- Researching the use of specialized technologies, including enhanced techniques to analyze data, to streamline services between the police and other providers
- Acquiring supports for de-escalation such as crisis response teams to help reduce conflict in police-public interactions.
This new grant program will support police modernization as the province transitions to a new community safety model, focussed on enhanced partnerships between police and other service providers.
Supporting safe communities is part of the government's plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.
- Ontario is providing $37.8 million in funding for 55 projects across the province through this year’s PEM grant program.
“The continued modernization of our police services is an important part of supporting community safety. This new grant program will help deliver modern, effective police services across the province, and will ensure communities can tailor their community safety services to local needs.”
