New Date for Inquest into the Deaths of Paul Stevens and Jeffery Sutton Announced

Dr. Roger Skinner, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto West Office, today announced that a new date for the inquest into the deaths of Paul Stevens and Jeffery Sutton has been scheduled.

Mr. Stevens, 51, died at St. Joseph's Health Centre on Feb. 14, 2015, after transfer from the Toronto South Detention Centre; Mr. Sutton, 36, died on Sep. 8, 2015, while in custody at the same detention facility. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. The chief coroner has directed that a joint inquest be held into the deaths.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding the deaths. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The inquest is expected to last two weeks and to hear from approximately 22 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at the Coroner's Courts Courtroom B, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. Robert Boyko will preside as inquest coroner and Tom Lissaman and Christina Mammoletti will be counsel to the coroner.
