Inquest Date into the Death of Ina Matawapit Announced

Dr. David Eden, Regional Supervising Coroner for Inquests, today announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Ina Matawapit.

Ms. Matawapit, 37, died on June 7, 2012 at the Weagamow Lake Nursing Station following a transfer from a police vehicle while in custody. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.  

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Ms. Matawapit's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last six days and to hear from approximately 10 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at the Days Inn, 3 Sturgeon River Rd., Sioux Lookout. Dr. Michael Wilson will preside as inquest coroner and Josh McKay and Julian Roy will be counsel to the coroner.
