Inquest Date into the Death of Mark Tomic Announced

Dr. Bonnie Burke, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, today announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Mark Tomic.

Mr. Tomic, 32, died on July 1, 2015, at Sunnybrook Hospital while under police custody. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.  

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Tomic's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last eight days and to hear from approximately 20 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2018, at Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex, Court Room B, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto. Dr. John Carlisle will preside as inquest coroner and Michael Blain will be counsel to the coroner.
