Inquest Date into the Death of Donald Mamakwa Announced

Dr. Michael B. Wilson, Regional Supervising Coroner for North Region, Thunder Bay Office, today announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Donald Mamakwa.

Mr. Mamakwa, 44, died on August 3, 2014, while in police custody. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.  

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mamakwa's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

The inquest is expected to last 10 days and hear from approximately 20 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the Ontario Government Building, Boardroom A, 189 Red River Rd., Thunder Bay. Dr. David Eden will preside as inquest coroner. Peter Keen and Kate Forget will be counsel to the coroner.
