Inquest Date into the Death of Phong-Nien Chau Announced

Dr. Paul Dungey, Regional Supervising Coroner for East Region, Kingston Office, today announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Phong-Nien Chau.

Mr. Chau, 40, died on July 24, 1994, of injuries sustained in an altercation at the Joyceville Penitentiary. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.  

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Chau's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

The inquest is expected to last one day and hear from approximately two witnesses. 

The inquest will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at the Superior Court of Justice, 97 Thomas St. E., Napanee. Dr. Bob Reddoch will preside as inquest coroner and Gerard Laarhuis will be counsel to the coroner.
