Inquest Date into the Death of Patrick Stoyka Announced

Dr. Karen Schiff, Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region, Hamilton Office, today announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Patrick Stoyka.

Mr. Stoyka, 27, died in hospital on January 27, 2018, while in police custody. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Stoyka's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

The inquest is expected to last five days and hear from approximately eight witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2019, at the Hamilton (John Sopinka) Courthouse, 45 Main St. E. Dr. Jennifer Tang will preside as inquest coroner and Mark Dean will be counsel to the coroner.
