Inquest Date into the Death of Rui-Filipe Nabico Announced

Dr. Bonnie Burke, Regional Supervising Coroner for Central Region, Toronto East Office, announced today that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Rui-Filipe Nabico.

Mr. Nabico, 31, died in hospital on November 4, 2016, after collapsing while in police custody. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.  

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Nabico's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.

The inquest is expected to last five days and hear from approximately 14 witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2020, at the Coroner's Court, Courtroom A, 25 Morton Shulman Ave., Toronto.  Dr. Bob Reddoch will preside as inquest coroner and Michael Blain will be counsel to the coroner.
